Primary School (K-2)

Learning to read begins with learning phonics. At LLS we use Highlands' Word Mastery program, which teaches phonics. After they master phonics, students begin to learn sight words. In reading they progress from recognizing individual words to short sentences. We use the Bob Books, I Can Read books, and other children's classics.

First Grade reads:

• The Story of Ping
• Billy and Blaze
• Little Bear

Second Grade reads:

• The Courage of Sarah Noble
• Mr. Popper's Penguins
• Little House in the Big Woods

Students memorize poems, songs, and scriptures. Teachers read aloud fairy tales, Mother Goose, Aesop's Fables, and other children's favorites. Penmanship and arithmetic come from Rod and Staff. First grade learns cursive writing from Memoria Press. We use Nature Study and nature story books for science.
